The 2009 Guide Dog Puppy Travel Day was held on Saturday, June 6, 2009. This annual event is hosted by L.A. Southwest and this year was attended by puppy raising clubs from Southern California (Orange County, Riverside, Glendale, South Bay, Antelope Valley, San Diego, Diamond Bar) and Yuma, Arizona (way to go, Yuma!).
With the cooperation of Metro Link, puppy raisers with their puppies in training are given free access to ride a train from their local station to downtown Los Angeles’ Union Station. From there, it is a short walk to historic Olvera Street, part of the El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Monument.
Raisers and puppies are treated to the colorful, crowded marketplace filled with Mexican shopfronts, restaurants, mariachi bands, and lively music and dancing. After gathering at La Placita for a photo op., tired puppies and raisers return home once again on the Metro Link trains.
